Abstract
Kwangjoo-Goon is located in the central part of Kyunggi-Do and borders with Yangpyung-Goon and Yuhjoo-Goon on the east, with Ihchun-Goon and Yongin-Geon on the south, with Shiheung-Goon and Seoul City on the west and with Yangjoo-Goon onthe north across the Han River. The Goon is mountainous and contains 13 Myuns such as Dolma, cholwol, Naksaeng, Daewang, Shitchon, Dochuk, Ohpo, Joongboo, Kwangjoo, Dongboo, Twoichon, Hamjong and Suhboo. Boochun Goon is located in the western part of Kyunggi-Do and borders with Seoul City on the east, with Shiheung-Goon on the south, with Inchon City on the west and with Kim-po-Goon on the north. This Goon is composed of flat fields, lower mountains and hundreds of islands. Islands are excluded from this study and 4 Myuns such as Sorae, Sosa-Eup, Ohjung and Keyang-Myun belonging to inland of the Goon are included for this study. Each Myun has about 10,000-20,000population and has 5 to 10 Ris.
This study was directed to these Goons as a partof the program of studying directly making a trip to each Myun in every Coon in Kyunggi-Do asfinding out the districts which have the crayfish and crabs having Paragonimus metacercaria is urgent because many children in rural areas eat raw and inadequately roasted crayfish and crabs and there is a traditional custom in Korea of taking raw crayfish juice for the treatment of measles, producing many public health problems.
One primary school from each Myun was selected and the pupils in older age groups were tested for this study being asked about their custom of eating raw and inadequately roasted crayfish and crabs and their environmental situation regarding drinking water and testing them with Paragonimus and Clonorchis antigen. The crayfish and crabs caught from the Myuns having many positive children with Paragonimus skin test were examined for Paragonimus metacercaria.
Many children in Kwangjoo-Goon ate raw and inadequately roasted crayfish and many children in Boochun-Goon and in some areas of Kwangjoo-Goon to where the branch of the Han River is communicated ate soysouce soakcd, inadequately roasted and raw crabs. The chirdren who drank the water of stream and from shallow wells were many in Kwangjoo-Goon and few in Boochun-Goon.
The districts disclosed as having higher Incidence of Paragonimiasis from this study were Pankyo-Ri,Sampyung-Ri, Daejang Ri in Naksaeng-Myun, Sang-juk-Ri in Daewang-Myun, Yoojung-Rl and Sanglim-Ri in Dochuk-Myun, Kwangjiwon-Ri and Ohjun-Riin Joongboo-Myun, Kwaneum-Ri and Woosan-Ri in Twoichon-Myun, Kwanjoo-Goon and Suhnjooji-Riand Nohohji-Ri in Keyang-Myun, Boochun-Goon.The infestation rate of crayfish with Paragonimus metacercaria was found to be as follows: 0.4% in Naksaeng-Myun, 0.9% in Daewang-Myun, 0.4% inDochuk¡¤Myun, 6.1% in Joongboo-Myun and 0.5%in Twoichon-Myun, Kwangjoe-Goon.
The custom of taking raw crayfish juice for thetreatment of measles is prevalent in these Goonswhich may give many harmful effects to growingchildren. I wish the public health authorities andthe school authorities in these Goons would striveto eradicate this bad custom.
